Nigeria named as a member of “Islamic Military Alliance” to fight terrorism

Without seeking  the approval of the National Assembly, President Muhammadu Buhari has taken a decision which many analysts believe has the potential of increasing tension between Christians and Muslims in the country as Nigeria was on Tuesday named as one of the 34 nations that have agreed to form a new “Islamic military alliance” to fight terrorism with a joint operations center based in Riyadh, Capital of Saudi Arabia.

The formation of the Islamic Military Alliance and its members were announced at a rare news conference on Tuesday by Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman who stated that the new Islamic military coalition will develop mechanisms for working with other countries and international bodies to support counterterrorism efforts. He said their efforts would not be limited to only countering the Islamic State group.

It would be recalled that the decision of Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida to join the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) resulted in unprecedented tension between adherents of Islam and Christianity because many Christians interpreted it as a surreptitiously move to tag Nigerian a Muslim state.
