Alhaji Yahaya Bello
Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Alhaji Yahaya Bello of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the Governor-elect of Kogi State, there is however muffled celebration in the State. Even the APC that is supposed to be revelling is in quandary.
The general consensus in the state and across the country is that the last is yet to be heard about the election.
Legal fire-works from the camps of the aggrieved, both within APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will begin in the next few days. Those expected to challenge the declaration of Alhaji Bello as governor in Court include the incumbent governor, Group Captain Idris Wada of PDP and Mr. James Faleke of the APC.
As is already well known across the country, Alhaji Abubakar Audu of the APC who was cruising to victory after the November 21 election died suddenly the next day. However, INEC declared the election inconclusive because of about 91 Polling Units where election did not hold.
If Audu had been declared the winner of the election, his running mate, James Faleke would have automatically become the governor-elect. Since the constitution and the Electoral act did not expressly provide for the situation where an election would be declared inconclusive and the leading candidate dies before the supplementary election, INEC sought for and accepted the counsel of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami that the APC should be allowed to substitute its candidate.
