News Analysis: Why the attacks on Oil facilities by militants must be quickly stopped

The Federal government have the option of engaging the militants in an all-out war or adopting a pacifist approach. However, nobody can predict how an all-out war will end. The militants may avoid direct confrontation with the Nigerian military and concentrate on bombing and destroying pipelines and oil facilities, thereby reducing the nation’s crude oil production capability. This, in turn will further dwindle resources available to government for developmental purposes. This may therefore be a very costly option

The news coming out of the oil producing Niger-Delta that militants have resumed the bombing and destruction of oil installations is not pleasant at all especially now that the price of crude oil has plummeted to about $30 per barrel.

There are reports that the destruction of gas and oil pipelines which started last week Thursday continued till Sunday morning in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to media reports, Oil and gas pipelines in the creeks of Gbaramatu and Ugborodo areas of Warri South West and those in Egbema, North local government areas respectively of Delta state were struck in the attacks.

“The gas pipeline, which runs from Olero creeks to Escravos were destroyed in the latest attack. Several crude lines were sabotaged while Makaraba, Otunana (Uton-Nana), Abiteye and Dibi flow stations were bombed,” one source said.
